Zig Build Tests
A test step is a named step that runs a project's tests through the build. This lesson adds a test step beside the run step.
A test step
The build script builds the same file twice, once as a program and once as tests.
const std = @import("std");
pub fn build(b: *std.Build) void {
const target = b.standardTargetOptions(.{});
const optimize = b.standardOptimizeOption(.{});
const exe = b.addExecutable(.{
.name = "calc",
.root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
.target = target,
.optimize = optimize,
});
b.installArtifact(exe);
const run_cmd = b.addRunArtifact(exe);
run_cmd.step.dependOn(b.getInstallStep());
const run_step = b.step("run", "Run the app");
run_step.dependOn(&run_cmd.step);
const unit_tests = b.addTest(.{
.root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
.target = target,
.optimize = optimize,
});
const run_unit_tests = b.addRunArtifact(unit_tests);
const test_step = b.step("test", "Run unit tests");
test_step.dependOn(&run_unit_tests.step);
}
More tests, same step
A second file with different functions uses the same shape of test step.
const std = @import("std");
pub fn build(b: *std.Build) void {
const target = b.standardTargetOptions(.{});
const optimize = b.standardOptimizeOption(.{});
const exe = b.addExecutable(.{
.name = "calc",
.root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
.target = target,
.optimize = optimize,
});
b.installArtifact(exe);
const run_cmd = b.addRunArtifact(exe);
run_cmd.step.dependOn(b.getInstallStep());
const run_step = b.step("run", "Run the app");
run_step.dependOn(&run_cmd.step);
const unit_tests = b.addTest(.{
.root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
.target = target,
.optimize = optimize,
});
const run_unit_tests = b.addRunArtifact(unit_tests);
const test_step = b.step("test", "Run unit tests");
test_step.dependOn(&run_unit_tests.step);
}
Run step still works
Adding a test step leaves the run step alone, so the program still runs on request.
const std = @import("std");
pub fn build(b: *std.Build) void {
const target = b.standardTargetOptions(.{});
const optimize = b.standardOptimizeOption(.{});
const exe = b.addExecutable(.{
.name = "calc",
.root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
.target = target,
.optimize = optimize,
});
b.installArtifact(exe);
const run_cmd = b.addRunArtifact(exe);
run_cmd.step.dependOn(b.getInstallStep());
const run_step = b.step("run", "Run the app");
run_step.dependOn(&run_cmd.step);
const unit_tests = b.addTest(.{
.root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
.target = target,
.optimize = optimize,
});
const run_unit_tests = b.addRunArtifact(unit_tests);
const test_step = b.step("test", "Run unit tests");
test_step.dependOn(&run_unit_tests.step);
}
Example
const std = @import("std");
pub fn build(b: *std.Build) void {
const target = b.standardTargetOptions(.{});
const optimize = b.standardOptimizeOption(.{});
const exe = b.addExecutable(.{
.name = "calc",
.root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
.target = target,
.optimize = optimize,
});
b.installArtifact(exe);
const run_cmd = b.addRunArtifact(exe);
run_cmd.step.dependOn(b.getInstallStep());
const run_step = b.step("run", "Run the app");
run_step.dependOn(&run_cmd.step);
const unit_tests = b.addTest(.{
.root_source_file = b.path("src/main.zig"),
.target = target,
.optimize = optimize,
});
const run_unit_tests = b.addRunArtifact(unit_tests);
const test_step = b.step("test", "Run unit tests");
test_step.dependOn(&run_unit_tests.step);
}
Key points
- Test step: a test step is a named step that runs a project's tests.
- addTest builds a runnable form of a file's tests, the same way addExecutable builds a program.
- addRunArtifact turns the built tests into a step the build can run.
- A passing test step prints nothing and exits with code zero.
- If a test fails, the test step fails, so a broken change stops the build.
- One project can hold both a run step and a test step, and each runs only when asked for.
The build script adds a test step beside the run step for the same file. The file holds a diff function and three test blocks that check it. The command zig build test runs those tests and prints nothing on a pass. The run step stays available for running the program itself.
Try it Yourself
