Offers and Negotiation

Offers and negotiation is the final stage where you compare written offers and discuss terms before accepting. It protects a good decision with clear facts and a calm reply.

Compare totals, not labels

Two offers can carry the same total with a different mix. The code adds base pay and bonus for each offer.

offer_a = 120000 + 10000
offer_b = 125000 + 5000
print("Offer A total:", offer_a)
print("Offer B total:", offer_b)
print("Same total, different mix.")

Compare more than pay

Pay is only one part of an offer. The code prints the other items to compare before deciding.

print("Compare: base pay")
print("Compare: bonus")
print("Compare: time off")
print("Compare: start date")

A calm reply draft

A short reply asks for time without rushing the decision. The code prints one draft reply.

print("Thank you for the written offer.")
print("I would like time to review the details.")
print("I will reply within the time we agree.")

Example

a_total = 120000 + 10000
b_total = 115000 + 20000
print("Offer A: base 120000, bonus 10000, total", a_total)
print("Offer B: base 115000, bonus 20000, total", b_total)
print("Offer B total is higher by", b_total - a_total)

Key points

  • Use a written offer as the basis for any comparison, not a spoken number.
  • Compare total pay, not just the first salary number.
  • Ask for time to decide when you need it, and give a date for your reply.
  • Put any agreed change in writing before you accept.

The totals put both offers on the same footing. Offer B wins on total pay, even though its base pay is lower. The mix still matters, so the written details stay part of the decision.

Note

a polite decline keeps the door open for later work.
