Answering Behavioral Questions
A behavioral answer is a short story about past work that shows how you handle a situation. It answers what happened, what you did, and what changed.
The STAR shape
Each part has one job, and the order stays the same. The code prints the four parts as a checklist.
parts = ["Situation", "Task", "Action", "Result"]
for i, part in enumerate(parts, 1):
print(str(i) + ". " + part)A worked outline
A short outline keeps the story tight before you speak it aloud. The code prints one outline for a deadline story.
print("Situation: A release date moved one week earlier.")
print("Task: I owned the test plan for the release.")
print("Action: I cut low-risk checks and ran the rest each night.")
print("Result: The release shipped on the new date with no failed checks.")Keep it short
A long story loses the point. The code counts the words in a draft and checks it against a short limit.
draft = "Our release date moved earlier. I owned the test plan. I cut low-risk checks and ran the rest nightly. The release shipped on time."
words = len(draft.split())
print("Words:", words)
print("Under 60:", words < 60)Example
print("Situation: A customer report arrived on a Friday with a Monday deadline.")
print("Task: I owned the reply and the fix plan.")
print("Action: I confirmed the fault, wrote a short fix, and checked it with the customer.")
print("Result: The customer confirmed the fix on Monday and the report closed.")Key points
- STAR is a shape for a behavioral answer with four parts in order.
- Situation states the setting in one or two sentences.
- Task states what you were responsible for doing.
- Action states the specific steps you took.
- Result states what changed because of those steps.
The story follows the STAR order from setting to result. The action names specific steps instead of vague effort. The result states a clear outcome.
Note
the action part should carry the most detail, since it shows your own work.
