A rook lift moves a rook up a rank to join the attack. The rook usually lifts after a pawn moves out of its way.

A rook lifts to the third rank

The pawn on a2 blocks the rook on a1. The pawn captures the pawn on b3. The king moves to e7, and the rook lifts from a1 to a3 along the cleared file.
