Mate in Real Games
Start: Spotting a Mate One Move Early โฏRead a mate before you play it
The course opens with escape squares, support, and blockers, and with the one-square difference between mate and stalemate, so you learn to count the king's moves before you trust a mating move.
That reading skill runs through every later lesson, because a mate is only real when every escape square is taken.
Basic endgame mates that always work
King and queen, king and rook in a box, two rooks in a ladder, two bishops, and bishop and knight each get a full lesson, with the box and ladder ideas explained step by step.
The two-knights lesson is honest about its limit, because two knights cannot force mate and correct defence draws.
Named patterns, grouped by the mating piece
First patterns cover back-rank, smothered, Scholar's, Fool's, Arabian, and corner mates, then rook mates, queen mates, bishop mates, and knight mates each get their own group.
Each pattern lesson teaches the shape, a worked example, and how to prevent it, so you can both play the pattern and stop it happening to you.
Pattern groups in the course
- Rook mates, including Anastasia's, Opera, Mayet's, Vukovic's, blind swine, kill box, H-file, railroad, and hook mates
- Queen mates, including dovetail, swallow's tail, epaulette, Damiano's, Lolli's, Greco's, David and Goliath, and mighty queen mates
- Bishop mates, including Boden's, double bishop, Blackburne's, Morphy's, Pillsbury's, and Balestra mates
- Knight mates, including double knight, suffocation, and minor piece mates
Rare mates and mates from real games
The rare group covers Lรฉgal's, Max Lange's, Rรฉti's, Stamma's, triangle, corridor, diagonal corridor, lawnmower, and Anderssen's mates, so no named pattern in the track is left out.
The final group turns to real games, with spotting a mate one move early, building a mating net from scratch, and famous finishes including the Opera game.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know tactics before this course?
Yes, this course assumes Chess Basics and Chess Tactics are complete, because mates build on checks, pins, and mating nets taught there.
Does every pattern lesson teach prevention too?
Yes, each pattern lesson teaches the shape, a worked example, and how to prevent it, with a prevention position you can play through.
Why does the two-knights lesson say mate cannot be forced?
Two knights can mate only when the defender helps by stepping into a corner, and correct defence keeps the king moving, so the honest result is a draw.
What is the difference between mate and stalemate?
In mate the king is in check with no escape, and in stalemate the king is not in check but has no legal move, which makes the game a draw at once.
Are the famous game positions real?
Yes, the famous games lesson uses finishes from the Opera game, the Lรฉgal trap, and Scholar's mate, each verified with the same move and mate checks as every other position.
How long does the course take?
Lesson minutes are set per lesson in the course data, and the total duration is computed from those minutes at build time.
