a b c d e f g hKey points
- A rook on an open file can move far and attack deep into the enemy position.
- Place a rook on an open file early in the middlegame. The rook then watches the whole file.
- Two rooks on the same open file are stronger than one rook alone.
- A file with only an enemy pawn on it can also be useful. A rook there attacks that pawn.
- Open a file by trading pawns on it. A pawn trade can open a file for your rook.
